General Information
Students can begin taking driver’s education classes at age 15 years and 5 months. A learner’s permit is not required in order to attend the classroom portion of training but is required for the 8 hours of driving with an instructor.
Students can obtain their learner’s permit at age 15 years and 6 months. Learner’s permits are obtained at a branch of the Ohio BMV. An exam must be taken and a passing grade must be obtained to validate the learner’s permit. A picture I.D. must also be purchased at this time.
After successfully completing the written exam, students can begin driving with their licensed parents or legal guardians. Students that have not reached their 16th birthday can drive only with a licensed parent of legal guardian. When they reach 16 years of age, they can drive with a licensed driver over the age of 21. The student must have the I.D. card and the permit paper in their possession while driving. Not having one of the other makes the process invalid.
The permit is valid for one year. If it expires, is lost or destroyed a new permit may be purchased and the written exam must be repeated and a new I.D. may need to be purchased. You must have your permit for 6 months before you are eligible to get your driver’s license. (6 months from the issue date)
Students are required to drive 50 hours with their parents of legal guardians. 10 of those hours are to be driven at night. A voucher must be signed and notarized stating that this portion of the license process has been completed. A student cannot take the driving test without this.
